  • Hawaii Natural History Association - About Us

Hawai'i Natural History Association is a National Park Service cooperating association, a nonprofit organization authorized by Congress to support the interpretive, educational, scientific and historic mission of the National Park Service. Proceeds from the sale of educational items in our outlets in park visitor centers and this Web site are returned directly to the Park Service to support interpretive programs, research projects, museum activities, free publications, cultural demonstrations, and other related activities. We also maintain a small publications program, producing our own books, guides, videotapes, posters and other items.

Please Note: The written Hawaiian language utilizes two special marks: the kahako or macron, and the okina or glottal stop. The kahako is a line over certain vowels, and indicates a stress. The okina looks similar to an apostrophe and indicates a break in the voice when uttering the adjacent vowels. Our technology does not allow us to display these marks consistently and correctly, so we have not used them.
